Belgium produced a ruthless knockout performance to beat co-hosts United States 4–1 at Seattle Stadium and move into the World Cup quarterfinals.

Charles de Ketelaere, preferred to Romelu Lukaku through the middle, struck twice either side of the half-hour mark to give Belgium control. Malik Tillman pulled the USA level in between with a well-taken finish, but Belgium's class told after the break as Hans Vanaken restored the lead just past the hour and Lukaku, introduced from the bench, added a fourth deep into stoppage time.

For the United States, it was a painful end to a hopeful home World Cup. For Belgium, it was a statement victory — clinical, composed and strong enough to set up a huge quarterfinal meeting with Spain.

Egypt were twenty minutes away from one of the great World Cup shocks. Yasser Ibrahim’s early header and a second-half Mostafa Zico strike had the reigning champions staring at elimination, before Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernández produced three goals in the final quarter of an hour to complete the turnaround.

Egypt goalkeeper Shobeir was the first-half story, saving a Messi penalty in the 21st minute and denying Alexis Mac Allister and Julián Álvarez before the break to keep Argentina scoreless. Mohamed Salah did not get on the scoresheet but was heavily involved in Egypt’s best moments.

Romero’s 79th-minute header started the comeback, and Messi — twice denied earlier — leveled it at 2–2 four minutes later with his eighth goal of the tournament, the most of any player at this World Cup. Enzo Fernández settled it in the second minute of stoppage time, a goal that also marked the 3,000th in World Cup history.

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan said his side were the victims of an "injustice" in their 3–2 Round of 16 defeat to Argentina, suggesting FIFA had wanted "Messi to stay in the running" at the tournament and accusing referee François Letexier of having "something to hide."

Hassan pointed to two key incidents: a first-half penalty shout for an alleged foul on Mohamed Salah that he said was "not even checked by the VAR," and Egypt's disallowed second goal. He was especially aggrieved that Alexis Mac Allister's tug on a shirt in the build-up to Enzo Fernández's stoppage-time winner was not reviewed. "We have all seen the shirt pulled back and not even a VAR check," Hassan said. "Life is unfair, normal life is unfair, so why is there no fairness in sports?"

"We looked better than the reigning champions — better in everything — but the result was influenced by internal factors on the pitch and external factors off it," Hassan told reporters. "There seem to have been pressures on the Argentina side on this outcome. We were objecting to the selection of the referee because of the French situation [Argentina beat France in the 2022 World Cup final], but everybody has to suffer at some point and we suffered."

Hassan was booked in the closing stages for remonstrating with Letexier, and said he told the referee directly that the decisions were unfair. "I said maybe he is carrying a scar or has something to hide," Hassan said. "If somebody is trying to hide something, they often fail to hide it." He added that he would not watch the rest of the tournament: "When I am finished, I am not going to watch another game of this tournament."

Argentina, who trailed 2–0 with twenty minutes left before goals from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Fernández completed the turnaround, have made no public response to Hassan's comments. They move on to face Switzerland in the quarterfinals on July 11 in Kansas City.

The captain had a night of extremes. Awarded a penalty in the 25th minute after being brought down by Noussair Mazraoui, Mbappé saw his spot kick saved by Yassine Bounou diving to his left — his first missed penalty at a World Cup, and only the second time a France player has missed one outside a shootout, after Karim Benzema against Switzerland in 2014. It looked, for a while, like it might be a costly moment against a Morocco team that had frustrated France for long spells and led at half-time on chances created despite trailing 0-0 on the scoreboard.

Mbappé put it right just after the hour. In the 60th minute he drove a finish past Bounou to open the scoring — his 8th goal of the tournament and 20th at World Cups overall, pulling him level with Lionel Messi atop the Golden Boot race. Six minutes later Ousmane Dembélé doubled the lead, cutting inside from the right and finishing low into the bottom corner to put the game out of Morocco's reach.

Bounou's penalty save was the clearest highlight for Morocco, who leave the tournament in the quarterfinals for a second straight World Cup after their historic run to the semifinals in 2022 — a tournament in which France also eliminated them, 2-0, in the last four.

Spain are through to the World Cup semifinals for the first time since they won the tournament in 2010, beating Belgium 2-1 in a tense, end-to-end quarterfinal at SoFi Stadium that swung on a late error from the Belgian goal.

Dani Olmo's shot was blocked into the path of Fabián Ruiz, who buried the rebound in the 30th minute to give Spain the perfect start. Belgium responded almost immediately, Timothy Castagne's cross finding Charles De Ketelaere to level the score in the 40th minute and send the sides in level at the break.

Belgium's afternoon was complicated further when captain Youri Tielemans was ruled out injured in the warmup, and it got worse in the second half when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had to be replaced through injury, with backup Senne Lammens summoned off the bench. Lammens' night ended in disaster: in the 88th minute he failed to hold a shot cleanly, and Mikel Merino was on hand to force the loose ball home for what proved to be the winner.

Spain arrived as reigning European champions and the only side yet to concede a goal at this World Cup before today, with five clean sheets in five matches. Luis de la Fuente's side topped Group H before beating Portugal 1–0 in the Round of 16 on Mikel Merino's injury-time winner. Norway struck first for the fifth time at this World Cup, Andreas Schjelderup beating Jordan Pickford with a blistering left-footed strike in the 36th minute. England responded before the break: Anthony Gordon slid a low ball across the box, Bellingham skipped past Torbjørn Heggem and finished into the bottom corner in first-half stoppage time to make it 1-1. Switzerland, who had eliminated Colombia on penalties in the previous round, refused to fold and drew level in the 67th minute when Dan Ndoye finished from a tight angle to make it 1-1.

The game turned late in normal time when Breel Embolo was shown a second yellow card for simulation after a video review, reducing Switzerland to 10 men and forcing them to defend the closing stages plus 30 minutes of extra time a man short. Argentina pressed but couldn't find a breakthrough until the 112th minute, when Julián Álvarez pounced to restore the lead. That will go down as one of the best World Cup games of all time. England beat France 6–4 at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday to finish third at the 2026 World Cup, in a third-place play-off that had no business being this good. Declan Rice set the tone inside three minutes with a curler from distance, then teed up Ezri Konsa's header soon after. Thomas Tuchel's side went in at the break 4–0 up after Bukayo Saka tapped in Marcus Rashford's unselfish pass and then curled home a second from the edge of the box — the first time France have ever conceded four goals in a World Cup first half.

France, however, showed their quality after the restart. Kylian Mbappé pulled one back in the 48th minute and teed up Bradley Barcola—on for Désiré Doué at half-time—to make it 4–2 before the hour. The France captain then struck again in the 66th minute, both goals from open play created by Michael Olise, to move to the top of the World Cup's all-time scoring charts — at least until Lionel Messi takes the field in Sunday's final, with the two now locked in a shootout for the record books. Olise's second assist of the afternoon also gave him seven for the tournament, the most by any player at a single World Cup since records began in 1966.

Just as France built towards an equalizer, Malo Gusto fouled Djed Spence in the box, and Saka stepped up to convert the penalty and complete his hat-trick, restoring England's two-goal cushion at 5–3. It looked to have settled a chaotic afternoon — until stoppage time produced two more goals. Dayot Upamecano, on himself at half-time, intercepted a Rice pass and released Ousmane Dembelé to make it 5–4 in the 96th minute, before Jude Bellingham drove through three France defenders and finished calmly in the 98th to make sure of the win. Bellingham's seventh goal of the tournament is the most by an England player at a single World Cup.

England finish third at a World Cup for the first time since 2018, a modest consolation after Wednesday's late semifinal collapse against Argentina. For France, it is a chastening end to the tournament and, on this evidence, possibly to Didier Deschamps' near decade in charge of Les Bleus. Attention now turns to Sunday, when Spain face Argentina in the final at MetLife Stadium — with Messi still to answer Mbappé's goalscoring statement from Miami.

Spain are world champions for the second time. Ferrán Torres settled a tense, defensive final in the 106th minute of extra time, meeting a Nico Williams knockdown with a first-time half-volley that gave Emiliano Martínez no chance, as Spain beat a 10-man Argentina 1–0 at MetLife Stadium. It is Spain's first World Cup since 2010 and comes at the expense of Lionel Messi, who at 39 brought the curtain down on his extraordinary international career in defeat.

For long spells it looked like the final would be decided by penalties. Spain had by far the better of the play throughout normal time — Rodri controlling midfield, Lamine Yamal a persistent threat wide — but could not turn territory into goals against an Argentina side that set up to frustrate and mostly succeeded, despite losing both starting center-backs to injury (Lisandro Martínez, then Cristian Romero) and being forced to use all five substitutes. Emiliano Martínez set a new record for saves in a World Cup final, at one point somehow keeping out a Ferrán Torres header at point-blank range in the second half after the Spain substitute had come on for Mikel Oyarzabal.

Argentina's task became far harder in the third minute of stoppage time, when Enzo Fernández was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Pau Cubarsí and sent off — only the sixth player ever dismissed in a World Cup final. Even so, Martínez kept his side level with virtually the last action of normal time, diving to deny a Lamine Yamal free-kick. But with an extra man and fresh legs from the bench, Spain finally broke through early in the second period of extra time: a long ball over the top, Nico Williams racing clear to head it back across goal, and Ferrán Torres arriving to finish clinically.

Argentina had no route back with 10 men and the game slipping away, and Spain saw out the remaining minutes comfortably to be crowned champions in front of a crowd of 80,663 — including U.S. President Donald Trump, on hand for the trophy presentation. The result also settles the Golden Boot: Kylian Mbappé finishes the tournament with 10 goals after his brace in the third-place win over England, two clear of Messi's 8, since Messi did not add to his tally in the final. Luis de la Fuente's Spain finish the tournament unbeaten and having conceded just once — a fitting way to end the most-watched World Cup in history.
